For 50 years Crate & Barrel has been delighting us with essentials for our homes that are as useful as they are beautiful. Their early embrace of European design showcased a very elegant practicality that helped change the way Americans thought about modern design - clean lines took on warmth, housewares became as playful as they were useful and the spirit of discovering something unexpected and wonderful became as magnetic for their customers as the affordable prices they offered.
This passion for discovery resonates not only in the products and companies they choose to work with, but in the imaginations and curiosity of the people who work for the company itself. Who would have guessed that our small design studio, Uusi would have been on the radar of their Senior Art Director, Karen Gaebe?!
Fearless and impressively decisive about what she likes, Karen is one of those people who happily searches among the chaos to bring out a focused gem. Enter Kickstarter! When Karen first discovered our Blue Blood deck on Kickstarter she immediately became a backer. This fall she backed Uusi again for our Bohemia deck and shortly after the project closed contacted us to ask if we would be interested in letting her use our playing cards in a photo shoot she was working on for their January catalog. Um, YES!
It was fun to be included in the Crate & Barrel photo shoot and see our work beautifully shot by the wonderful photographer, Laura Dart, whose work can also be found in the gorgeous lifestyle publication, Kinfolk. Can't wait to see all the images in the January catalog!
